Bridging Medicine and Fitness: Inside the MedFit Education Conference with Founder Lisa Dougherty

If you’ve ever wondered where fitness fits into the medical spectrum — or felt unprepared to train a client with cancer, diabetes, arthritis, or a recent joint replacement — this blog post is for you. On a recent episode of the 9 to 5 Wellness Podcast, I sat down with Lisa Dougherty, founder and CEO of the MedFit Education Foundation, to talk about her mission, her story, and the global virtual conference that’s changing how fitness professionals — and everyday people — think about health.

The Gap Nobody Was Filling

When Lisa founded the MedFit Education Foundation in 2017, she saw a glaring problem: the fitness industry trains professionals to work with generally healthy people, but the clients who need expert guidance the most are those managing chronic disease, medical conditions, and disabilities.

She started small, with free weekly webinars. Then came eight multidisciplinary, university-based conferences over two years — the kind where a chiropractor, a nutritionist, a massage therapist, and a personal trainer could sit at the same table and learn how to work with someone going through cancer treatment or managing diabetes together, instead of in separate professional silos.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Lisa pivoted again. With educators suddenly available and eager to contribute, the foundation built 23 online medical fitness specialist certificate programs in just three years — covering everything from arthritis to diabetes to postpartum fitness. And here’s the best part: you don’t need a fitness background to take them. As Lisa put it, “even though the title says fitness in there… my mom can take the arthritis fitness specialist” course, just to learn how to stay fit with the condition herself.

Today, the MedFit Education Foundation is the world’s largest provider of online medical fitness education.

A Conference Born From Personal Strength

The story behind this year’s global virtual conference is deeply personal. Lisa shared that she was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer a couple of summers ago. Rather than letting that diagnosis slow her down, she turned it into fuel for something positive — a legacy project she could point to no matter what came next. She partnered with a virtual events platform to launch the foundation’s first global conference, choosing a virtual format specifically so she could contribute without the physical demands of an in-person event.

The result exceeded every expectation. Attendees came from 13 different countries, and the platform’s own team confirmed it generated more signups and views than any event they’d ever hosted. This year’s conference is already outpacing those numbers.

What’s Inside the 2026 MedFit Education Conference

This year’s event runs September 24–27 and features:

  • 90 sessions across a huge range of topics — from chair-based workouts and Pilates for shoulder injuries, to bone health in women, blood sugar management, menopausal care, prenatal and postpartum fitness, stress management through yoga, and aging-brain health
  • 181 speaker applications, narrowed down to the top 90 — described by Lisa as “the cream of the crop”
  • High-profile keynote speakers donating their time, including Colin Milner (CEO of the Council on Active Aging, a World Health Organization speaker who normally charges $5,000–$10,000 per talk) and Nick DiNubile (former Presidential Physical Fitness Committee member and PBS Framework series contributor)
  • Multiple time zones, so no matter where you are in the world, there’s a live session near your schedule
  • Six months of on-demand access, so you can revisit any session, or share it with someone who needs it
  • CEUs approved through ACE, NASM, and AFAA — and if your certifying body isn’t listed, most agencies will approve credit for a small petition fee
  • Live Q&A, even for sessions airing in different time zones — questions get collected and answered by presenters regardless of when you watch

And this isn’t just for fitness professionals. As Lisa emphasized, the conference is built for personal trainers, healthcare providers, and fitness enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, supporting a family member through a health condition, or simply focused on your own long-term health span, there’s a session for you.

Why This Matters: Lifespan vs. Health Span

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was Lisa’s reminder that longevity isn’t just about living longer — it’s about staying capable. Citing research that shows a sharp decline in cognition, strength, and processing power between ages 70 and 75, Lisa made the case that what you do now determines how independent you’ll be decades from now. That’s the real promise of the MedFit Education Conference: not just information, but a head start on your health span.
